12. Collins Transmitter
This Collins A830-2 exciter was KBOO's first radio transmitter, bought by community radio godfather Lorenzo Milam. It output ten watts on 90.7 from June 1968 until 1970, when it became the first stage of a Raytheon 1,000 watt transmitter. Later it was incorporated into a 10,000 watt RCA transmitter and was finally retired in 1978. It started out on Healy Heights in a garage on top of wooden pallets (the antenna was on a 50’ tower behind the garage). It covered 188 square miles with 10 watts. KBOO's current transmitter operates at 10,000 watts from the Stonehenge tower, covering 5,144 square miles.
