11. That Was Before, How About Now?
Since going on the air, KBOO has grown to 26,500 watts, owns its 5,000 square foot building, and has an annual operating budget of about $800,000.
KBOO now works with over 500 volunteers, twelve Board of Director members, and fourteen staff. On average, 81,580 people listen to KBOO on a weekly basis and over 5,000 of those people are members. They broadcast “forty eight hours a day” with twenty four hours of on air programming and a growing online archive.. Every month, KBOO conducts 20-30 hours of training for youth and adults. In addition, KBOO provides 60-80 hours a month of one-on-one mentorship in radio production.
The station highlights the work people are doing to improve the world — locally, nationally, and internationally. The ongoing community building experiment of KBOO is still going strong after 50 years of existence.
